About this region

The area around Pescaglia, Fabbriche di Vallico and Valdottavo is commonly known as
la Mediavalle del Serchio, the Serchio being the river that runs through the main valley down to Lucca.
Lucca is due south from here, approximately 15-30 mins by car.

The Garfagnana starts north of Pescaglia and stretches due north.
It encompasses Parco dell'Orecchiella and borders the Apuan Alps to the east.

The famous towns of Barga and Bagni di Lucca are in the middle of the Garfagnana.

This is a land that (for now) time has almost forgotten; a hidden treasure of Tuscany.
It is littered with hamlets and small villages which have been depopulated over the last 50 years.
There is a charming quaintness about this area, untouched by mass tourism and industry.

The old arts and crafts are still being carried out, albeit by fewer and fewer artisans, but you can still find the
ironmonger who runs his workshop solely via a water mill and houses untouched for decades if not a century.

For nature lovers there is a wealth of choice, from the National Park dell'Orecchiella to
the Apuan Alps to the Garfagnana area itself.

Local cuisine is hearty and seasonal and most sporting activities are catered for.
